On the SAT, each multiple choice section is scored from 200-800, with the average score being 500. The ACT has a maximum score for each of the 4 sections of 36, and I’m not sure of the minimum (12 maybe?)
Test prep materials can help with such areas as becoming familiar with the test and understanding tips and tricks to help you with certain types of questions. Test prep will also help you review concepts that you’ve learned before and might be rusty on.
i wouldn’t count on test prep materials to teach you concepts you haven’t learned before, however.
What constitutes a good score will of course depend on the colleges you plan on applying to, but above 500 on a section of the SAT would be considered above average, and I don’t know for sure, but I’d say anything over 24 on a section of the ACT would be above-average.
Many colleges will list the average SAT/ACT scores of their students on the admissions section of their website.
Good luck!
